ALL QUESTIONS

What are mushroom spores used for?

Mushroom spores are sold here strictly for microscopy and taxonomy research. Under a microscope, each strain reveals a world of its own — unique shapes, surface textures, germ pores, and structural details that have fascinated mycologists for centuries. The Wizard has spent years studying these specimens and finds them endlessly interesting. Universities, independent researchers, and curious minds alike use spore swabs and prints to document and study fungal diversity. That is the purpose. That is the only purpose.

Are mushroom spores legal to purchase?

In most U.S. states, Canada, and many countries worldwide, mushroom spores are legal to purchase and possess for microscopy research — they do not contain psilocybin or psilocin. However, laws vary considerably by location, and the Wizard is not your attorney. It is your responsibility to understand the laws where you live before placing an order. The Wizard does not ship to jurisdictions where purchase or possession may be restricted. Ignorance of local law is not a defense the Wizard can help you with.

How do I store my spore swabs properly?

Keep them cool, dark, and sealed. Room temperature — somewhere between 60 and 75°F — is perfectly adequate. Leave them in their original packaging until you are ready to use them. Direct sunlight, heat, and moisture are the enemies of viable spores. Properly stored, swabs remain useful for up to twelve months. Refrigeration is not required. Freezing is actively discouraged — ice crystals are unkind to spore walls, and the Wizard has seen too many good specimens ruined this way.

What is included with each order?

It depends on the format you choose. Swab kit orders include two sterile spore swabs pre-loaded with millions of viable spores from your selected strain, individually sealed to prevent contamination. Spore syringe orders include a 10ml sterile syringe filled with distilled water and spores, one sterile needle, and one alcohol swab — everything needed to prepare a slide. Glass slide orders include a pre-loaded borosilicate slide ready to go directly under the microscope. All formats are prepared under clean-room conditions and inspected before packaging. Orders of $40 or more ship free.

What is a spore swab and how does it compare to a spore print?

A spore swab is a sterile cotton swab pressed against a spore print to collect viable spores. The Wizard recommends swabs for beginners — they are clean, intuitive, and require no extra equipment. Roll the tip lightly across your glass slide and you are ready to observe. A spore print is a flat impression left by a mushroom cap on paper or foil — a beautiful archival record of natural spore dispersal, and the Wizard has a deep fondness for them. But for microscopy preparation, swabs are simply more convenient.

How long will my order take to arrive?

Orders are processed and shipped within one to two business days. Domestic U.S. orders typically arrive within three to seven business days via standard shipping. Shipping is free on all orders of $40 or more. Orders under $40 carry a flat $10 shipping fee. Expedited options — two-day and overnight — are available at checkout. A tracking number will be sent once your order ships. International orders may take two to four weeks depending on customs. The Wizard cannot control customs. No one can.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. The Wizard ships to most countries worldwide. International customers are responsible for understanding their local laws regarding spore importation. All packages are discreetly labeled and packed securely for the journey. International transit typically takes two to four weeks. The Wizard cannot be held responsible for packages seized or delayed by customs authorities — that is between you and your government, and the Wizard prefers to stay out of it.

What payment methods do you accept?

The Sanctum accepts payment via CashApp. This is intentional — it keeps transactions simple, direct, and off the traditional banking infrastructure that the Wizard finds unnecessarily complicated. No credit card numbers, no CVVs, no banking credentials are ever entered on this site. Your financial data never touches our servers. Send payment to the CashApp handle provided at checkout, include your order number in the note, and the Wizard will get to work.

What is your return and refund policy?

All sales are final once an order has shipped. This is not indifference — it is the nature of biological specimens, which cannot be restocked after leaving the Sanctum. However, the Wizard stands behind every kit that goes out. If your order arrives damaged, leaking, or visibly contaminated, contact us within seven days of delivery with photographs. A replacement will be dispatched at no charge. The Wizard does not ship things he would not use himself, and he takes quality failures personally.

Are your spores tested for contamination?

Every batch is prepared in a HEPA laminar flow clean room under Class 100 protocols. Every swab is visually inspected before packaging. The Wizard has been known to discard entire batches over imperfections that most people would never notice — not because it is required, but because anything less feels like a failure. Triple-filtered sterile distilled water. Heat-sealed packaging. The standards here are, by most measures, unreasonable. The Wizard considers them the minimum.

What magnification do I need to view spores?

For basic observation — confirming spore presence and general morphology — 400x total magnification is sufficient. That is a 40x objective with a 10x eyepiece, which most entry-level compound microscopes provide. For detailed study of surface texture, germ pores, and fine structural features, 1000x with an oil immersion objective is where things get genuinely interesting. The Wizard recommends starting at lower magnification and working up slowly. Rushing past 100x before you have found your focus is a beginner mistake the Wizard has made more times than he will admit.

Can I prepare a microscopy slide at home?

Yes — and with spore swabs, it is about as simple as it gets. You will need a compound microscope, a glass slide, and a cover slip. Roll the tip of your swab gently across the slide surface to deposit a thin layer of spores. Lower a cover slip at an angle to avoid air bubbles. Begin at low magnification and work upward. The Wizard also sells premium borosilicate glass slides in the shop if you need them. There is no reason this should be intimidating. The fungal kingdom is patient with beginners.

How is my payment information protected?

The Sanctum accepts payment exclusively via CashApp. This means no credit card numbers, CVVs, or banking credentials are ever entered on this site — there is nothing to intercept. Your financial data is handled entirely by CashApp on their infrastructure. The Wizard receives only a payment notification once the transaction clears. All connections to this site are encrypted via 256-bit SSL. The Wizard is not a security engineer, but he is also not careless with other people's information.

Do you store my credit card details?

No credit card details are collected here at all. The Sanctum does not accept credit cards. Payment is via CashApp only, which means your card number, CVV, and banking credentials never enter this site in any form. There is nothing to store, and nothing to lose.

What personal information do you collect, and why?

Only what is necessary to get your order to you: your name, shipping address, and optionally your email for order receipts and shipping notifications. The Wizard does not sell, rent, or share your information with third parties for marketing purposes. Your email is used only for transactional communications related to your order, unless you separately opt into the newsletter — which the Wizard recommends, as rare strain drops are announced there first.

Is my order history and browsing activity private?

Your order history is accessible only to you and the Wizard's fulfillment process. It is never shared, sold, or used for advertising. The Sanctum does not use tracking pixels or third-party advertising trackers. All communication between your browser and this site is protected by 256-bit SSL encryption. The Wizard has no interest in your browsing habits. He has enough to think about.

Can I change my shipping address after placing an order?

If your order has not yet shipped, contact the Wizard immediately via the contact form and every effort will be made to update it. Orders are typically processed within one to two business days, so time matters. Once a tracking number has been generated, the Wizard cannot redirect the shipment — you would need to contact the carrier directly. The Wizard is efficient, not magical. Well — not entirely magical.

My order arrived damaged — what do I do?

Photograph the damage before handling the item further. Then contact the Wizard within seven days of delivery via the contact form — include your order number, a brief description, and your photos. A replacement will be reviewed and dispatched within one to two business days at no cost to you. The Wizard takes quality failures seriously. Every report is read personally, and every one of them stings a little.

I never received my order — what should I do?

First, check your tracking number for the latest status. Carriers occasionally mark packages as delivered a day early, or leave them with a neighbor or building mailroom without notice. If tracking shows delivered but the package is genuinely missing, wait 24 hours — this resolves the majority of cases. If it is still missing after that, contact the Wizard via the contact form with your order number. An investigation with the carrier will be opened. The Wizard does not abandon his shipments.

What is a spore syringe?

A spore syringe is a liquid suspension of mushroom spores in sterile distilled water, pre-loaded into a sealed syringe. Spores are harvested from a verified specimen, suspended in 10ml of triple-filtered sterile water, and sealed under clean-room conditions. The water keeps spores hydrated, evenly distributed, and ready for immediate microscopy use. Syringes are widely used in mycology research because they allow precise, controlled deposition of spores onto a slide. Each one from the Sanctum comes with a sterile needle and an alcohol swab — everything needed from the moment the package arrives.

What's included in a spore syringe kit?

One 10ml syringe filled with sterile distilled water and viable spores from your chosen strain. One sterile luer-lock needle, separately capped. One alcohol swab for sanitizing before use. The syringe is capped, heat-sealed, and inspected before shipping. Everything arrives ready to use — no additional equipment required beyond your microscope, slides, and cover slips.

How do I use a spore syringe to prepare a microscopy slide?

Wipe the syringe tip and needle with the included alcohol swab and allow it to air-dry for thirty seconds. Attach the sterile needle. Place a clean glass slide on a flat surface. Express one or two small drops — roughly 0.1 to 0.2ml — onto the center of the slide. Lower a cover slip at a 45-degree angle, letting it fall flat to minimize air bubbles. View under your microscope, starting at 100x and working up to 400x or 1000x oil immersion for detailed observation. Recap the syringe tightly after use. The Wizard recommends labeling your slides — the strains are distinct under glass, and it would be a shame to lose track of which is which.

How should I store my spore syringe?

A refrigerator — 35 to 46°F — is ideal and can extend viability to twelve to eighteen months. Keep the needle cap sealed to maintain sterility. Do not freeze the syringe. The expansion of water during freezing damages spore cell walls and can crack the syringe body. The Wizard has seen this happen. It is not a pleasant outcome. If refrigeration is unavailable, a cool dark location below 75°F is acceptable for three to six months. Shake gently before use to re-suspend any settled spores.

How does a spore syringe compare to a swab or a glass slide?

All three formats carry the same genetics — the difference is in workflow and preference. A swab is the simplest entry point: roll it across a slide and observe. No liquids, no needles, no preparation. The Wizard recommends it for anyone just beginning. A syringe gives more control over spore density and allows multiple slides from a single specimen — preferred by researchers who want precision. A pre-loaded glass slide is the fastest option of all: open the package and place it directly under the microscope. The right choice depends on how involved you want to be in the preparation. The Wizard enjoys all three, for different reasons.

Is there a way to learn grain preparation before attempting it?

Yes. The Sanctum has an interactive Grain Prep simulator where you can practice hydrating, loading, and sterilizing grains in a virtual environment — no real supplies wasted. It is a safe way to learn the rhythm of the process before working with actual equipment. The simulator is available for anyone curious about the techniques, not just customers. The Wizard believes that understanding the process makes you a better researcher, and he has always been a believer in preparation.
